Cruise WiFi & Tech Tips: How to Stay Connected at Sea

Staying connected while sailing the high seas is easier than ever, but cruise WiFi can still be a bit tricky if you’re not prepared. Whether you want to post port-day pics in real time or check in with family back home, this guide will help you stay online without the stress. Below are my favorite cruise WiFi tips, tech gear must-haves, and a few travel-friendly gadgets I always pack.

Cruise WiFi Packages: What You Need to Know

Most cruise lines now offer tiered internet packages. You’ll usually see two or three levels:

  • Basic Surf: Great for emails, texting, and light browsing.

  • Social Media: Includes access to platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

  • Streaming: Best for video calls, YouTube, and Netflix.

Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Virgin Voyages all have solid WiFi. You’ll basically be covered on any ships equipped with Starlink. Just remember that connection quality can vary depending on location and time of day.

Pro Tip: Regularly keep an eye on internet packages leading up to your cruise. Cruise lines often have sales and you may be able to snag a higher internet speed or additional devices for a fraction of the cost.

My Favorite Cruise Tech Essentials

To stay connected and powered up, I never cruise without a few key items. These make a huge difference in keeping everything charged, organized, and protected:

USB/USBC Charging Block

A ship-approved charging block that can plug in 4 devices at once!

Portable Power Bank

Perfect for long excursions when you're away from outlets!

Travel Cable Organizer

Keep it together in one place with this organizer for cords and electronics.

3-in-1 Travel Charger

Charge your phone, watch, and AirPods with one device!

Magic-Style iPad Keyboard Stand

When you don’t want to travel with your heavy laptop, this is a lifesaver!

Pro tip: Sea days tend to have slower speeds because everyone’s online. Be sure to get any important work or communications completed on port days.

Should You Use a VPN at Sea?

While I personally have never felt the need to use a VPN, it’s something to consider depending on your needs for internet. If you’re working remotely and/or have sensitive information on your devices, I’d recommend using a VPN for added security. Public ship WiFi is just like hotel WiFi, which is convenient but not always secure.

Check out this article by Forbes for VPN options and more information on security while traveling.

Final Tips to Stay Connected Without Going Overboard

  • Take a screenshot of your boarding pass before you arrive at the terminal. Cell service can be spotty at ports.

  • Download offline maps and entertainment before you sail.

  • Don’t forget to turn on airplane mode! Even if you have WiFi, be sure airplane mode is turned on while you’re at sea to to avoid surprise roaming charges.

Cruise WiFi doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right tech and a little prep, you’ll be able to stay connected when and where it matters most. Got questions about your cruise gear or WiFi package? Drop them in the comments or shoot me a DM on any social platform!
